Just about all of us dream of having that perfect job. How about you? What is your dream job? If you are into indoor cycling, maybe you’d love to get a job teaching classes at a local cycle studio – or even one of the big corporate outfits that seem so popular today. Find the right opportunity and you could be looking at six figures.
To be clear, six-figure salaries are not the norm. They are reserved for the most talented and popular instructors who work for corporate giants. But even instructors who work for local cycling studios can make a comfortable living. It is really in who you work for and how often you teach.
Employees and Contractors
Mcycle, an indoor cycling studio located in Salt Lake City, Utah, says that instructors at local studios can be either employees or independent contractors. It really depends on how a studio decides to conduct its business. Either way, local instructors are part of the community in which they teach.
Employed instructors are on the payroll just like bookkeeping staff, management, and support staff members. Independent contractors run their own small businesses as instructors. They may provide classes for multiple studios in a given area. They manage their own schedules, pay their own taxes, cover their own insurance, etc.
Contractors do enjoy the freedom to make more money by working for multiple studios. But they also face the risks of operating a small business. Those risks include economic downturns and insufficient volume. They also have to put in extra work on the administrative side of things.
Corporate Instructors
As for corporate instructors, they seem to be in the best positions financially. For example, recent news reports suggest that the most popular Peloton instructors easily make six figures between their salaries, endorsements, and stock options. One particular instructor mentioned by Yahoo! News lives in a New York penthouse worth nearly $1.5 million.
Corporate operations obviously enjoy the benefits of scale. A company like Peloton provides remote classes to students around the world. That gives them the ability to pay significant salaries to their most popular instructors. Truth be told, popularity is actually the key to making money in both the corporate and local environments.
Popularity Equals Students
Indoor cycling is a sport that can be enjoyed at home or at a studio. In a studio setting, ownership relies on the ability instructors have to get people through the door. The more students, the higher the revenues. So it stands to reason that the most popular instructors would earn the most money.
There is no way to say for sure how much the more popular instructors make. But let us assume a local cycling studio pays its instructors a base rate for each class, plus additional commissions based on the number of participants for each class. An instructor whose classes are always packed will walk away with a bigger paycheck.
So what makes an instructor popular? Unfortunately, it may have more to do with charisma than actual knowledge or skill. An instructor’s main goal is to keep students motivated as they go through the routines. Motivation is often a matter of choosing the right music, putting together an effective routine, and knowing how to encourage while speaking to students.
It is possible to make six figures as an indoor cycling instructor. That’s not to say every instructor makes that much, because most don’t. Yet even local instructors in the five-figure range can make a comfortable living in the saddle. If you have what it takes, it could even be your dream job.
